My birth was unplanned. My home-life was not easy. I ended up homeless for 1 1⁄2 years and then checked myself into an orphanage in order to have the stability to graduate from high-school. At that point I was invited to a pro-choice meeting. Out of curiosity I decided to go.
When I arrived 15 minutes late, I had planned on slipping quietly into the back, but the large oak door slammed shut loudly behind me. At that point I had everyone’s attention, including the speaker’s, so I decided to ask the question that was burning on my mind:
“What makes you believe abortion is a good thing?”
“Consider the child” – he challenged compassionately. “Consider a child who was unplanned, has a rough childhood and ends up living in an orphanage. Would we not be doing this child a favor by not exposing it to such a miserable existence?”
“I am that child!” I blurted out into his rhetorical silence. “I was unplanned, had a rough childhood and am living in an orphanage right now. And yet I am glad to be alive, because God made me, he loves me and had good plans for my life. That is all that matters.”
There was complete silence in that room. One by one the visitors and members got up and left. There was nothing left to be said. My story showed that the value of life is not dependent upon one’s circumstances. The truth God speaks over our lives is stronger than any lies.
